In a brief statement, JLR - Britain’s biggest car maker - said the shutdown had been extended until 1 October, with staff, suppliers and other partners told on Tuesday.

It noted: "We had made this decision to give clarity for the coming weeks as we build the timeline for the phased restart of our operations, and continue our investigation.

"Our teams continue to work around the clock alongside cybersecurity specialists, the NCSC (National Cyber Security Centre) and law enforcement to ensure we restart in a safe and secure manner."

JLR’s global production lines ground to a halt in late August after it was hit by the cyber incident.

At the time, it said systems had been shut down "proactively" and that it was working "at pace" to restart global applications.

Shortly afterwards JLR confirmed "some data" had been affected, before extending the shutdown to 24 September.

JLR has UK facilities in Solihull, Halewood and Wolverhampton, which together produce about 1,000 cars a day. It is also has an extensive UK supply chain, with many suppliers heavily reliant on the car giant.

JLR, owned by India’s Tata Motors, employs around 30,000 directly in the UK but supports more than 100,000 jobs in the supply chain.

Most of its staff have been told to stay home during the shutdown.

Business secretary Peter Kyle is due to hold a meeting with JLR executives later on Tuesday.

Industry minister Chris McDonald said: "We have two priorities - helping JLR get back up and running as soon as a possible, and the long-term health of the supply chain.

"We are acutely aware of the difficulties the stoppage is causing for those suppliers and their staff, many of whom are already taking a financial hit through no fault of their own."

Industry commentators expect disruption from the attack and shutdown to last until well into November.
