The AIM-traded company said the prototype marked a significant step forward in the Faraday Battery Challenge ‘HISTORY’ programme, and represented the battery capacity that it was planning to optimise for its minimum viable product for EV applications.

It said it expected the technology to lower costs, increase vehicle range, and reduce charging times.

The achievement followed Ilika’s recent demonstration of manufacturing feasibility in a giga-scale factory setting at the UK Battery Industrialisation Centre, using industry-standard equipment.

It also built on progress made in 2024, which included the start of commercial testing, initial customer shipments of prototype Goliath batteries, and the release of validated safety data.

Ilika said it would now focus on further optimisation based on initial test results before launching a full build and test programme in the second half of 2025.

The company was targeting the initial release of batteries of this capacity for partner evaluation by the end of the year, bringing it another step closer to commercialisation of its solid-state battery technology for EVs.

“This milestone marks the successful conclusion of a grant-funded collaboration, which has enabled Ilika to prototype large EV batteries in readiness for closer engagement with automotive partners,” said chief executive officer Graeme Purdy.

“We look forward to securing further support for Goliath commercialisation through the UK government's recent announcement of £2bn of funding for the electrification of the transport sector.”
